When a golfer says that they “got up and down” on that hole, this means that they hit a chip or a pitch shot and then made the putt. Let’s say that I hit my approach shot and missed the green to the right. I will have to hit a pitch shot from the right rough to get the ball on the green, and then I will have to make a putt. If I make my first putt (for a total of 1 putt), I successfully got my pitch shot “up and down”. If I miss that putt (for a total of 2 or more putts), then I have “missed an up and down opportunity”.
