Who is this drill best for?
- Beginner golfers who struggle to get to the top of their backswing
- Intermediate golfers who want to check and perfect their backswing
Required Materials and Equipment
- Mid iron (I prefer a 5-iron for this drill)
- (optional) a video camera or mirror - this will allow you to check your positions in the DTL view
Drill Overview
The goal of this drill is to help you get into the perfect position at the top of the golf swing (P4 position).
Drill Instructions
Grab a 5-iron, grip it normally, then hold it directly out in front of your body:

Now, rest the club on your shoulder:

In the third step, make a proper turn of your upper body, keeping the club rested on the shoulder and focusing on your hip and shoulder turn.

Finally, straighten out your left arm (if righty) for a perfect position at the top!

If done correctly, you should have about a 90 degree angle between the left arm and right forearm. This maintains proper extensor action as described in my post on the flying wedges.
