Who is this drill best for?

  • Golfers who struggle with over the top motions
  • Golfers who struggle with downswing sequencing
  • Golfers who struggle to get power and lag in the downswing

Required Materials and Equipment

  • Bucket of golf balls at the range
  • Your choice of club (split-hand variation works best with 3-wood)

Drill Overview

The purpose of the pump drill is to teach you the proper sequence for the downswing and train your body to properly "bump" the hips and drop the club into the "slot". This will help you achieve more lag and power in your golf swing.

Drill Instructions

Grab a short iron, a bucket of range balls, and for as many repetitions as it takes for you to feel comfortable with the motion, follow this sequence:

  1. Two "pumps"
  2. Hit the ball

Drill Variations

Variation #1: No ball

If you struggle to make contact with the ball in the default version of this drill (very common for beginners since this is hard!), you can do the drill without a ball at all.

Getting the overall motion down is still highly beneficial!

Variation #2: Split hand

While I have an entire drill dedicated to the "split hand" variation, this is where you grab your club (preferably a 3-wood) about halfway down the shaft and practice turning back and down, focusing on the feeling you're getting in the pre-impact position:
