Who is this drill best for?

  • Golfers who struggle to be "on plane"
  • Golfers who struggle to get their lead arm straight at the top of the backswing

Required Materials and Equipment

  • A longer club (preferably a driver or 3-wood)

Drill Overview

No ball is needed for this drill! This drill is very simple but can be extremely effective in teaching golfers what "on plane" feels like without any complicated swing plane training tools!

Drill Instructions

  1. Grab a driver, 3-wood, or long iron
  2. Using your lead hand, grab about 1/3 of the way down the clubshaft
  3. Practice turning to the top of your swing, then bringing the club back down to the pre-impact position
  4. Notice how it feels to be in this position just prior to impact. If you do the drill correctly, you will be naturally "on plane"

Take the club to the top

Now take the club back to just prior to impact.

Drill Variations

Extensor Action

You can alternatively drop the club altogether and practice grabbing your thumb of your non-dominant hand with your dominant hand. In this variation, you should feel your thumb being pulled to straighten out the arm.
