If you struggle with fast hips on the downswing, the alignment stick drill is a great way to sequence your transition and downswing to be on plane.

Who is this drill best for?

  • Golfers who have fast hips that spin out during the downswing and cause the club to get "stuck behind" their body

Required Materials and Equipment

  • Alignment stick
  • Shorts/pants with a belt loop
  • Bucket of golf balls at driving range

Drill Overview

With just an alignment stick, this drill trains your lower body to slow down. This drill is best practiced at a driving range starting with a short club and working your way up to longer clubs as you get better with your sequencing.

Drill Instructions

To properly do this drill, I recommend starting with a short iron. The effects of "fast hips" is more pronounced with longer clubs, so wedges and short irons are the easiest place to start getting the feel for things.

Place an alignment stick through your belt loops:

Once you've done that, start making 1/2 swings, ensuring that the club passes the alignment stick before impact.

Below is the improper position that you want to avoid:

If you sequence your hips correctly, you should successfully be able to get the club past the alignment stick prior to impact:

Drill Variations

Variation #1: Split hand drill

I talk more extensively about this in the split hand drill, but if you struggle to get the hands past the alignment stick in the beginning, I suggest trying to simulate the proper on plane motion by grabbing the club 1/3 of the way down the shaft and rehearsing the proper impact position:
